LOCAL PRODUCTS
We guess, that before leaving Chios, you would like to buy some local products. The best place to do it, is the city of the island, called also “Chora / Χώρα”.
For mastic products (also cosmetics with mastic) we suggest you go to the “Mastiha Shop” in the port of Chios, or to “Anemos“, for larger quantities.
The mastic liquers that we suggest are the “Πηξάρι“ (Pixari) or the “Στουπάκη Ομηρικόν” (Stoupaki Omirikon). They are available in every market or liquor store.
Chios is famous of its Ouzo. Not so much as Lesbos, but the seven Ouzo producers of the island are doing a very good job. Two suggested Ouzos are the “Apalarina Paradosiako (or black) / Απαλαρίνα Παραδοσιακό” and the “Kasanisto Ouzo Stoupaki / Καζανιστό Ούζο Στουπάκη“. You can find them to any market, but you could also arrange to visit the factories that they produce them.
The thymian honey is something you should not forget to buy. The neighbouring island of Psara (Ψαρά) produces a high quality thymian honey. Try to find the Psara Thymian Honey in the market of Chios. For those nice local products you can visit the shop named “Kalamaris / Καλαμάρης” at Roidou 13, 82100 Chios / Ροΐδου 13, 82100 Χίος.
If you like sweets, you should buy the traditional “Spoon Desserts / Γλυκά του κουταλιού” of Chios. Apart from the typicall sorts that you will find to other places in Greece, in Chios there are some special, extraordinary sorts such us lemon blossom, rose petals etc. A nice traditional shop that you can find a big variety of local products is the “Korakis-Marinos / Κοράκης-Μαρίνος“.
Definitely try the locally produced Fresh Chios Beer. It is delicious!!
The Pasta Workshop “Chiotiko Kellari / Χιώτικο Κελλάρι” located in Vessa, produces different kind of pasta using local ingredients such as chian mandarin. You can find their products in every market.
Do not forget to try the delicious products -like peanut and almond butter- of the small local company “Kiss the earth“.
And last but not least, do not leave the island without trying the legendary “Masourakia / Μασουράκια” of the patisserie “Dia xiros Avgoustaki / Δια χειρός Αυγουστάκη“.
In the medieval villages of southern Chios (Mesta, Pyrgi and Olympi etc.) there is a cultivation of anhydrous cherry tomatoes / άνυδρα ντοματάκια. Τhe shortage of water led to the establishment of a tomato cultivation with minimal watering. After harvesting the tomatoes, the villagers tie them in a chain and hang them on the facade of their houses. You can ask them personally, if you are interested to buy some. They are delicious!!!
